World Occupational Therapy Day

Launched in 2010, World Occupational Therapy Day takes place each year on 27th October. Designed to celebrate and promote the profession all over the world, the event has grown to become one of the most important dates on the occupational therapy calendar.

Occupational therapy (OT), is a profession that exists within healthcare. It is defined as 'the use of assessment and intervention to develop, recover, or maintain the meaningful activities, or occupations, of individuals, groups, or communities.

World Occupational Therapy Day is organised by The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT). The organisation, comprising more than 100 national professional organisations working in the field of OT and representing over 580,000 occupational therapists globally, exists to 'set the standard for occupational therapy education internationally and promote excellence in research and practice'.

The event provides a unique opportunity to increase the visibility of the vital work carried out by occupational therapists every day. It also helps to raise awareness and promote WFOT's many activities on a local, national and international scale.

World Occupational Therapy Day has a different theme each year: for 2021, the theme is 'Belong. Be You.' There are many ways to get involved with the event and a wide range of useful resources are available to download from the WFOT website.

Also taking place on 27th October 2021 is the OT Global Day of Service (OTGDS). This event is organised by the WFOT in partnership with www.promotingot.org. OTDGS is open to any OT practitioner or student who wishes to provide volunteer community services to individuals or organisations. The event defines 'service' as engaging in any unpaid activity intended to benefit others.
