Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2024

Article - Mar 2024 Neurodiversity celebration weekThis week, 18th - 24th March, is Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2024. 'Neurodiversity' is an umbrella term that covers a vast array of conditions characterised by alternative styles of thinking and information-processing, such as autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, dyslexia and dyscalculia.

It is estimated that as many as one in five members of the general population has a neurological difference and Neurodiversity Celebration Week (NCW) was created to raise awareness of the challenges faced by these individuals as well as to recognise their unique talents.

Taking place annually all over the world, the NCW initiative seeks to challenge the many misconceptions, myths and stereotypes associated with neuro-developmental disorders with the aim of transforming how neurodivergent people are perceived. By providing various charities, organisations and educational establishments with unique opportunities to recognise the many advantages of being neurodivergent, NCW helps to create more equitable and inclusive cultures that empower individuals and celebrate their differences.

The abundance of free resources provided by NCW is aimed, among other things, at addressing the worrying lack of training that education providers have to enable them to identify and support neurodivergent students with special educational needs. Thousands of organisations and hundreds of thousands of individuals take part in events during NCW, which this year runs from Monday 18th March to Sunday 24th March inclusive.

NCW began in 2018 and was the brainchild of Siena Castellon. Just 16 years of age when she launched NCW, Siena has autism and ADHD as well as dyslexia and dyspraxia. During her education, Siena experienced numerous challenges and was subject to prejudice and bullying; though obviously affected by such cruelty, she used the experience as motivation to create NCW. Her achievements have been rewarded with several accolades, including Person of the Year at the 2020 Special Needs Jungle Awards and Campaigner of the Year at the European Diversity Awards in 2019.

Delivered in collaboration with Lexxic, a leading psychological consultancy specialising in the field of neurodiversity, NCW is supported by a wide variety of organisations including AstraZeneca, Savills, Deloitte, The London Stock Exchange Group and the UK Ministry of Defence.

The symptoms that characterise and in many circumstances contribute to the isolation of people living with neurological conditions can be managed in many ways. One of those ways is by wearing made-to-measure Class 1 medical garments to help manage neurological and musculoskeletal conditions and improve proprioception. Dynamic orthoses are clinically proven to improve function, coordination, muscle tone and proprioception through the provision of dynamic compression.
