Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a group of rare inherited conditions that affect the connective tissue, which provide support to the skin, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, internal organs and bones. This causes very flexible joints and stretchy and fragile skin.

Common symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome include:

  • Increased range of joint movement (joint hypermobility) or flexible joints
  • Stretchy skin
  • Skin that breaks or bruises easily

The most common type of EDS is Hypermobile (hEDS), people with hEDS may offen experience the above symptoms, along with:

  • Joints that dislocate easily
  • Joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Heartburn & constipation
  • Dizziness & increased heart rate after standing
  • Stress incontinence

There's no cure for Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and cases vary in severity, with some people having mild symptoms and others experiencing severe disabling symptoms. Support from professionals like physiotherapists can help you manage your symptoms. Ehlers-Danlos syndromes are often inherited from one or both parents but in some instances, can occur for the first time.
