Lymphoedema affects over 140 million people around the world. The condition is a result of a compromised lymphatic system, causing swelling of body tissues and localised fluid retention. Lymphoedema can affect any part of the body, but it most commonly develops in the arms or legs. Lymphoedema is a chronic condition and though there is currently no known cure for lymphoedema, there are ways to reduce the severity of the symptoms through the recommended treatment for lymphoedema, decongestive lymphatic therapy (DLT).
DLT has 2 phases, the first being an intensive phase, to which there is generally daily treatment for a number of weeks to help reduce the swelling of the affected body part. The second phase is to maintain the reduction in swelling through taught self-management techniques, including massage (simple lymphatic drainage or SLD), wearing compression garments and exercise. Skin care is also important to reduce the risk of infections like cellulitis.
The lymphatic system has no central pump to move fluid to the lymph glands so it relies on the massaging effect of surrounding muscles to move the fluid. As exercise gets the muscles moving more, this helps to move the fluid in the lymphatic system and reduce the oedema accumulating in the affected body part. Manual lymphatic drainage (or MLD) is also carried out by health care professionals to massage fluid from swollen areas to the lymph nodes to be drained. Compression garments including sleeves, gloves, stockings, tights, socks etc act as a counterforce to muscles to assist the movement of fluid to reduce swelling and to stabilise the condition.
